Walter was having a hard time getting excited about Winterfest. He was up awake all night, he couldn't sleep due to nightmares. It was going to be a hard first Winterfest without his dad. Not that they were close anyway, but since Hayes passed away Walter has grown more distant from his mother. That was expected, she seemed to always have her hands full with his siblings. Joel was the only family member he felt like he could talk to, but even then Walter would at times see the pain behind Joel's eyes each time they talked about Walter's dad. Joel loved Hayes, and he loved Walter just like he was his own. Yet, it seems his quality time with Joel had died down since Ellie was born. Maybe he was jealous. He always had to fight for attention from his mom and Hayes, but never Joel. But now that Joel has his own kid, did he even care about Walter? It's crazy how lonely he felt in a house full of Sims.
